Data Centers Are Fueling America’s AI Expansion

Data centers are a critical part of the infrastructure behind modern artificial intelligence. As AI systems require increasingly large amounts of computing power, demand for facilities capable of housing powerful computer equipment continues to grow.

For supporters, that expansion represents more than a technology trend. They argue that data centers can bring investment, infrastructure and new sources of tax revenue to communities.

Communities Can Benefit From Data Center Tax Revenue

Loudoun County, Virginia, which has become known as “Data Center Alley,” was highlighted as an example. According to an analysis cited in the discussion, eliminating data centers from the county could leave homeowners facing significantly higher property taxes while maintaining the same level of government services.

Another example comes from Louisiana’s Richland Parish. Teachers there reportedly received bonuses of up to $50,000, with tax revenue connected to Meta’s AI data center helping support the payments.

Those examples illustrate why some communities see data centers as potential economic engines rather than simply large industrial facilities.

The Electricity Debate Cannot Be Ignored

The expansion of data centers also raises legitimate concerns about America’s electricity supply.

Large facilities can consume substantial amounts of power, and Epstein acknowledged that data centers can contribute to higher electricity prices when they are added to an already-constrained grid without adequate planning.

Peak demand presents an especially important challenge. During extreme weather, such as a winter storm, electricity usage can rise sharply. If a major data center is drawing significant power at the same time, it can add pressure to an already stressed system.

Epstein argues, however, that this does not mean data centers are inherently harmful to electricity customers.

New Infrastructure Could Turn a Challenge Into an Opportunity

According to Epstein, the impact of a data center depends heavily on how the facility is integrated into the power system.

He pointed to states such as North Dakota and New Mexico, arguing that when new data centers are supported by adequate electricity capacity or accompanied by additional generation and infrastructure, they can potentially help distribute the fixed costs associated with power development.

Transmission systems, power lines and generation facilities require major investments. Epstein’s argument is that additional demand from data centers can sometimes help support those investments, potentially benefiting other electricity users as well.

The broader message is straightforward: data center development needs to be planned rather than simply accepted or rejected.

Why Residents Continue to Push Back

Despite the potential economic benefits, opposition to data centers remains strong in some communities.

Environmental concerns are part of the debate, while electricity and water consumption have also become major issues. But Epstein suggested that opposition often comes down to something more personal: residents simply do not want a large technology facility near their homes or neighborhoods.

Distrust of major technology companies can also influence public opinion.

For some residents, the rapid growth of Big Tech and artificial intelligence has created uncertainty about what these facilities represent and how they will affect their communities.

Epstein believes some of those concerns could change as people become more familiar with how data centers operate. He argued that properly developed facilities can function largely as buildings that generate substantial tax revenue without necessarily becoming disruptive neighbors.

Epstein Says AI Could Deliver Benefits Beyond Data Centers

The data center debate is ultimately connected to a much larger question: what will artificial intelligence mean for ordinary Americans?

Epstein argues that AI should not simply be viewed through the same lens as social media. While social media can provide benefits, he says it can also encourage people to spend excessive amounts of time seeking digital attention.

AI, by contrast, has the potential to provide individuals with powerful forms of assistance and access to knowledge.

Epstein compared the possibilities to services that were once largely available to wealthy people, including private tutoring, high-level medical guidance and personal assistance. In his view, AI could make some of those capabilities accessible to a much broader segment of society.

America Faces a Choice Over Data Center Growth

The debate over data centers is unlikely to disappear as artificial intelligence continues to expand.

Communities must weigh electricity demand, water use, infrastructure requirements and neighborhood concerns against potential tax revenue, investment and economic development.

For Epstein, the answer is not to dismiss legitimate criticism or automatically embrace every proposed facility. Instead, he advocates a balanced approach that considers both the costs and benefits.

His conclusion is that when data centers are developed responsibly, with adequate infrastructure and careful planning, their benefits can outweigh the negatives. In that scenario, the facilities supporting America’s AI revolution could become a major economic opportunity for communities across the country.
