Traffic Advisory: Utility Work for New Arena to Impact N. Broadway Avenue
January 15, 2026
Drivers in downtown Oklahoma City should prepare for traffic changes as utility construction tied to the Oklahoma City New Arena project begins next week.
From January 19 through February 28, North Broadway Avenue will be closed between West Sheridan Avenue and West Main Street to allow crews to install new underground utilities, including a manhole and electrical lines. South Broadway Avenue will remain open during this period.
To reduce disruptions for nearby hotels and businesses, OG&E will temporarily adjust the median on North Broadway Avenue, creating a designated turnaround area to help maintain access for the Sheraton Hotel and Wyndham Grand Hotel.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead, use alternate routes when possible, and follow posted detour signs throughout the construction zone.
Former Convention Center Demolition Continues
The new arena is being constructed on the site of the former convention center, located across from the Paycom Center. Demolition of the structure began in March and is expected to continue into early 2026.
Originally opened in 1972 as the Myriad Convention Center, the facility later became known as the Cox Business Services Convention Center and Prairie Surf Studios. Over more than five decades, the building hosted thousands of events and gatherings.
Stay Updated on the Project
Residents can stay informed about demolition progress and arena-related updates by signing up for notifications through the City of Oklahoma City.
Background on the Oklahoma City New Arena
In December 2023, Oklahoma City voters approved a one-cent sales tax by a 71% margin to fund construction of a new publicly owned arena. The following May, the Oklahoma City Council finalized a development agreement between the City and PBC Sports and Entertainment, LLC, owners of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Oklahoma City Blue.
The arena will be funded through a 72-month, one-cent sales tax that begins after the MAPS 4 tax expires, without increasing the overall sales tax rate. Additional funding includes $78 million from MAPS 4 and $50 million from the Thunder ownership group. Operations of the new venue will be managed by Legends/ASM Global.
Estimated at $900 million, the arena will span at least 750,000 square feet and is designed to:
-
Serve the long-term interests of Oklahoma City residents
-
Meet or exceed NBA standards and requirements
-
Strengthen team revenue opportunities to ensure the future of major league sports in the city
The Thunder will continue playing home games at the Paycom Center until the new arena opens. Construction is targeting completion in late summer 2028, with a contractual deadline of June 2029. Once the team moves into the new facility, a 25-year commitment to remain in Oklahoma City will take effect.
